SPECIAL CHARACTER
Hastings Girls' High School was opened in 1955 and is well known for its warm, supportive environment and its desire to promote excellence in academic, sports and cultural spheres for young women.
LOCATION AND FACILITIES
The college is situated in Hastings which is the hub of a plains area renowned for its viticulture, horticulture and farming industries. The school has a large park nearby, is very close to town and has spacious sports fields. The school has five networked computer rooms, as well as library and classroom computers around the school. It has an excellent library, music suite, two gymnasiums, science laboratories, art rooms, graphics and design room, food technology suite and a student support centre. This is unique to our school and caters for our international students in ESOL.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME/SUBJECTS OFFERED
The school prepares students for tertiary study offering a variety of subjects in small classes. A wide range of NCEA and National Qualification Framework subjects are available. All courses are open to international students.
EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAMME
Many opportunities are available for participation in sports and cultural groups. The school encourages students to develop new interests and advance their talents both as individuals and as members of teams.
SPECIAL RELATIONS WITH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The school's Student Support Centre caters for the individual needs of students. Tuition is available to improve subject performance.
Hastings Girls' High School welcomes international students and values this contact with other cultures. Most of our international students are from the Pacific rim and Asia, but we also have students from Scandinavia, Europe and North America .
Opportunity is provided for international students to participate in many extra-curricular activities. These activities include:
playing sport
attending camps during school holidays
ski trips
Cultural trips to other cities such as Wellington , the South Island and Rotorua.
senior students may have driving lessons and obtain their licences before moving to a tertiary institution
Special purpose instruction can be arranged, such as ballet, flying and martial arts.
STUDENT WELFARE
The school has an excellent pastoral care system with a full time Guidance Counsellor and experienced Deans at each level.
The Director of International Students and the staff in the Student Support Centre help each individual student. The school provides regular reports to parents. All our international students are given special opportunities to join school trips and extra curricular visits.
ACCOMMODATION/HOMESTAYS
International students live with a New Zealand family arranged by the school. Students usually walk or cycle to school. Bus transport is also available.
The school appoints a manager to arrange, manage and liaise with home stays. The Homestay Co-ordinator will help the students have an enjoyable stay. Students are always met on their arrival at the airport.
Home stays are carefully selected.
The homestay manager liaises between home and the school.
The school provides special care to assist with travel, finance, health and study matters.
Girls are expected and encouraged to take a full part in the family life of their homestay.
Girls have many opportunities to visit other parts of New Zealand and experience the New Zealand lifestyle.
Homestay experiences help develop English language skills.
