As part of our 100% attendance strategy, we have an opportunity to have Margaret Ross visit our Kura. She is inspirational and comes with years of experience working with rangatahi and behaviour. Come and listen to her practical ideas to help students achieve their best. You deserve this support - Tuesday 16 May, 6-7pm in the Hall/Staffroom.

  • Year 9 - Tuesday 16 May

  • Year 10 - Wednesday 17 May

Our school library will be open for students to study.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is next Friday 19 May. This is in support of Anti-Bullying. If you choose to wear pink on the day please bring a gold coin donation (proceeds to the Mental Health Foundation), otherwise please wear full school uniform. This year's theme is promoting kindness and inclusion.

Uniform Reminder

Correct uniform is required at all times. Can we please remind you that our footwear is either Roman Sandals or Black School Shoes as shown below. Please ensure students are wearing our school jersey or cardigan. It is important to our school and our community that students wear the uniform with pride.

Exploring the Great Outdoors Hub

During Term 1, the two Exploring the Great Outdoors Hubs focused on the beach - waves, tides and rips and also about how the weather impacts coastal erosion. We spent a night camping at Waimārama at the end of the term and the girls spent time in the Lifeguard tower identifying rips. Special thanks to Waimārama Surf Lifesaving Club for letting us look around and for allowing us to use their tower and binoculars.

Level 3 Rotorua PE Trip

The Level 3 PE students spent an action packed few days in Rotorua last week with the focus on contemporary leadership styles and safety and risk management. Despite the constant rain, we were able to experience a range of activities in the area, gathering evidence for future assessments.

Futureopoly

The Year 11 students attended the Dingle Foundation Futureopoly careers event. Futureopoly is an interactive career pathways event where students visit different industry sectors made up of local businesses and ask questions and participate in activities to earn stickers towards prizes.

Kī o Rahi Competition

Over the Easter holidays the Ākina Kī o rahi team, made up of 8 students from HGHS and 8 students from HBHS, took part in the NSS Kī o Rahi Competition in Rotorua.

Despite injuries, the team showed perseverance and placed 16th out of 38 schools competing from across Aotearoa. During the two-day competition, the group developed as a team and improved as the opposition became increasingly challenging.

Our female players player was Ricki Te Pou, from Pathway to the Podium Hub. Our male players player was Mokau Lambert. @buckethats_nz kindly donated each player a $40 voucher for this achievement.

We would like to thank the following organisations for their tautoko of the team:

@aratakihoney for donating their honey to gift as koha to our volunteers and host marae.
@vitasportnz for donating a huge quantity of electrolytes to keep our players fueled.
@propercrisps for donating their new BIG CUT crisps.
And a huge thank you to @apolloprojectsnz.

We are so grateful for all your support and difference it makes to our rangatahi and sports teams.
