Term One Week 5

Principal's Message

Kia ora e te whānau

What an incredible day we had at our Athletics Day! The atmosphere was electric with colour, energy, laughter, and fun. It was wonderful to see 100% participation from both students and staff, creating a fantastic spirit of competition and camaraderie. A huge congratulations to Green House for taking out the win! This sets a great tone as we gear up for next week’s Swimming Sports where we expect to see just as much enthusiasm and House pride on display.

A special congratulations to our students who have been shortlisted for Te Rōpu Mana Huia. Now the hard work begins as they prepare for our regional competition – we can’t wait to see their dedication and talent shine. Their commitment to excellence in kapa haka is inspiring and we are grateful for the support of our tutors, whānau, and wider community in helping them achieve success.

A heartfelt thank you to our wider school community for your ongoing support. Whether through the Board, sporting events, or cultural activities, your willingness to step up makes an enormous difference. We are simply unable to provide such an incredible range of opportunities without you. Your contributions—whether big or small—help ensure that our students can thrive, grow, and develop in a well-rounded and supportive environment.

With winter sports preparation well underway, we are still looking for Coaches and Managers for our Netball teams due to an increased number of teams. If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved, we would love to hear from you! Supporting our teams is a rewarding experience and a great way to give back to our school community.

Our senior students have now completed their academic goal-setting for 2025, an important step in their learning journey. Setting clear, aspirational goals provides direction and motivation and we look forward to supporting them in achieving their ambitions. Read on to find out more about this process and how whānau can engage in meaningful conversations to help guide and encourage our students.

Have a fabulous weekend and thank you once again for being a part of our wonderful school community!

HGHS Debaters Shine at Hawke’s Bay Secondary Debating Competition

At the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Debating Competition held at Napier Boys' High School last weekend, our team of talented debaters—Pippa, Niranjana, Elizabeth (captain), Khushi, and Niharika—showcased impressive growth, leadership, and confidence.

While they didn’t secure a placing, their dedication and teamwork were truly inspiring. Their ability to think critically, articulate arguments, and support one another throughout the competition was a testament to their hard work and commitment.

We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they represented Hastings Girls' High School with pride. Well done to the team!

Celebrating Maddie Seumanutafa’s Outstanding Achievement

Hastings Girls’ High School | Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina celebrates Maddie Seumanutafa’s incredible achievement!

Maddie has been selected to represent the Newcastle Knights in the prestigious Lisa Fiaola Cup, a highly competitive NSW Rugby League female state competition for players aged 17 and under. At just 15 years old, Maddie’s selection is an outstanding accomplishment, highlighting her talent, dedication, and commitment to the sport.

She will spend Term 1 in Australia, training and competing at an elite level before returning to school in Term 2. Despite the challenges of high-performance sport, Maddie remains committed to her education, continuing her learning remotely with the support of her teachers. Her ability to balance both academics and sport is a testament to her discipline, resilience, and work ethic.

We also acknowledge and thank Maddie’s whānau for their unwavering support, ensuring she thrives both on the field and in her studies.

Maddie, you are an inspiration to your peers, teachers, and the wider school community. We are immensely proud of you and can’t wait to see all that you accomplish—both in Rugby and beyond. Kia kaha!
