Principal's Message
Tēnā Koutou Katoa
It has been a very busy week and it has been great seeing our students immersed in their learning and settled in school.
A pānui has been sent to our caregivers regarding the upcoming CAA exams. Please keep an eye on your inbox and check your spam folder in case the pānui has gone to this folder.
Our Level 2 Outdoor Education class returns from the Bay of Islands today. We wish them a safe journey home after a week of incredible activities in the Far North.
We would like to congratulate our students who participated in the Senior Debating Competition earlier this week at Woodford House.
This week, we had the Hawke's Bay Road Safety team kōrero with our Level 2 students. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to learn and think critically about the importance of road safety for now and in the future.
Yesterday, we had our Moana-nui-a-Kiwa whānau engagement hui. Seeing our students lead this and present their learnings to whānau and 'aiga was heartwarming. Thank you to all who contributed to making this evening a success.
We are coming into the final week of our Showquest preparations. This event will be spectacular and will be held at Toitoi on the evening of Monday 19 May. Our students and staff have been working hard towards this. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2025/showquest-hawkes-bay-2025/hastings
We would like to congratulate Maddy Seumanutafa on her outstanding achievement of being named "Player of the Year" for the U17s Newcastle Knights. This is a massive achievement and we are incredibly proud of her.

Ākina Café & Breakfast Club
A friendly reminder that our Ākina Café is open each morning from 8:00-8:30am operating out of the Hall Kitchen. We’re serving up barista-made coffee and freshly baked goods to help start your day the right way.
This space also serves as the Breakfast Club for any student who would like a FREE bowl of Weet-Bix before school—no need to book, just drop in.
Please help spread the word—many students still don’t know the café is up and running in the mornings.
And don’t forget, you can place your lunch orders online at:

On the Road for Safety
Our Year 12 students visited Hastings Boys' High School on Wednesday for the HB Youth Road Safety Mini Expo 2025.
It was a powerful and eye-opening experience where ākonga explored what it truly means to be a safe driver. Through real-life stories and hands-on activities—like trying the fatal vision goggles, tackling the FENZ crash quiz, and stepping inside the booze bus—they learned just how serious the consequences of unsafe choices can be.
A huge thank you to Road Safe HB and the Eastern District Police team for delivering such an impactful and engaging day. You're helping shape the future of safe driving in our community!
Puhoro Holiday Camp
It’s Thursday today, and I’ve just wrapped up my Defence Force camp. It was a solid experience, an awesome opportunity to visit both the Ohakea Air Force Base and the Linton Military Camp. What really stood out to me was how much more attention I paid to the depth and structure of both the Army and the Air Force. I didn’t just see what they do, I got a real sense of why they do it, and how each role contributes to the bigger picture.
Before going to the camp, I had a general idea about both forces. I knew the Army was on the ground and the Air Force was in the sky but beyond that, I hadn’t thought too deeply about how each unit operates. Now, after this experience, I understand a lot more about the trades, the training, the teamwork, and the purpose behind the uniform. I learned about discipline, readiness, and the different skills each force offers, especially the detailed structure and strategy behind their operations.
I met some great soldiers too, people from different trades, each with their own stories, opinions, and perspectives. Talking to them really opened my mind and made me see the military world in a much more human, grounded way.
But what hit me the most, what stuck, was the advice I received. One of the key messages was this: give everything a go. Don’t wait around. Put in your own effort to chase what you love because at the end of the day, your actions reflect who you are. It’s not about being perfect or having it all sorted. The recruiters made it clear, they’re not just looking at the outcome. They’re looking at the process, the effort, and the grit. They want to see motivation, determination, and a willingness to work hard. That’s what earns respect.
For me, I’ve already taken that to heart. I’ve been using AI tools to help create a structure for myself, focusing on both fitness and mental strength. From workouts and diet suggestions to building a consistent school routine, I’m now locked in on improving myself daily. I’ve got no excuses anymore. I know what I want. I want to become an SAS soldier, or possibly a Medic but my goal is clear and I’m ready to chase it.
“This is for me, and my capability to do so.”
