Principal's Message
Ngā mihi o te tau hou Māori ki a koutou katoa e ngā whānau
Matariki is a time that marks the Māori New Year, a time to remember and honour those who have passed on, to reflect, come together, and look ahead to the future.
This week, we began our celebrations with a special Matariki assembly alongside our Te Rōpū Manu Huia brothers, who joined us to return the shared taonga we placed earlier this term at the Hāro o te Kāhu regional campaign. The ceremony was conducted with tikanga and kawa appropriate to the occasion. We are incredibly proud of our ākonga and the strong relationship we share with our brother school. We now look ahead with excitement to the upcoming National Kapa Haka campaign together.
Our Huia Kaimanawa Council also ran some fun and interactive Matariki activities throughout the week for all students to enjoy. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa for your efforts in helping us celebrate this special time.
As part of our Matariki outreach, our students visited Gracelands to share a performance with our kaumātua. As always, our girls were warmly welcomed, and it was a privilege to bring joy through waiata. These visits are a humbling experience and a meaningful way for our students to give back to the community and acknowledge the contributions of our elders to the opportunities we have today. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou, e koro mā, e kui mā, mai i a tātou o Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina.
We were also privileged to host the Manukura Rugby team this week. Thank you to all the students, staff, and whānau who have made this annual exchange possible. We appreciate your continued support.
Next week is the final week of the term. The pressure is on to complete assignments and finish the term strong. We’re aware that colds and flu are circulating, please take care of yourselves. We're nearly there!
We wish you all a safe and restful long weekend with your whānau.
Nui ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa.
Timetable Update for Week 1 Term 3
We’d like to inform whānau and ākonga that Term 3 will begin on Week 1 of our regular timetable cycle. This means that when students return to school at the start of the term, they will follow their Week 1 timetable.
The final week of Term 3 will also follow a Week 1 timetable.
Please encourage your child to check their timetable and be prepared for the correct week as we begin and end the term.
Welcoming Te Rōpū Manu Huia from HBHS
On Monday, we were privileged to have our Te Rōpū Manu Huia brothers from Hastings Boys’ High School join us and bring the shared taonga from our placings at the Hāro o te Kāhu regional Kapa Haka competition. This was conducted with tikanga and kawa of Karakia and Waerea as part of the formalities of te ao Māori.
Te Rōpū Manu Huia then performed items from their bracket. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa, ngā ākonga, ngā kaiako, me ngā whānau. Ngā mihi hoki ki a koutou katoa i runga i te tau hou o te iwi Māori. Mauri Ora!
Una Voce Shines at The Big Sing
On Wednesday 11 June, our combined choir from Lindisfarne College and Hastings Girls’ High School—Una Voce—embarked on an exciting journey to The Big Sing, the region’s largest and most prestigious choral competition for secondary schools.
Una Voce had been diligently preparing for this event since early in Term 1. Countless hours were spent refining notes, perfecting harmonies, and uniting as one cohesive ensemble. All that hard work truly paid off when they finally took the stage!
Una Voce approached the entire experience with pride, positivity, and professionalism. Their dedication and enthusiasm were evident every step of the way.
During the day, our choir traveled to Toitoi – Hawke’s Bay Arts & Events Centre, where they performed three carefully prepared pieces in front of the competition judges. Later that evening, they returned to Toitoi to perform once again, this time showcasing a single piece at the Choral Showcase Concert, alongside other talented choirs from across the region.
The entire event was an inspiring celebration of music and community. From classical to contemporary, the variety of genres and the sheer talent on display made the concert a truly unforgettable experience. Watching so many passionate young singers come together to share their love of music was nothing short of magical.
We are incredibly proud of Una Voce for their commitment, perseverance, and courage. Their performance was a testament to their hard work and teamwork and they represented both schools with excellence.
Well done, Una Voce!
Rotorua Adventure: Leadership, Learning and Laughter!
Our two Level 3 PE classes just spent four amazing days in Rotorua! The girls tried so many new experiences while focusing on their assessments about contemporary leadership styles and safety and risk management. They pushed past their fears, gave everything a go with smiles and laughter, and honestly were an absolute dream to take away. So proud of their effort and positive attitude!
Ngā Manu Kōrero 2025
Last Friday, Lani Kawana, Year 12, proudly represented our Kura at the regional Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competition held at the Napier War Memorial Centre.
Competing in the Korimako (Senior English) section, Lani delivered a powerful and moving speech on the theme “Find My Place.” Her kōrero beautifully captured her personal journey, cultural identity, and the strength of wāhine Māori — speaking with courage, heart, and pride for both her whānau and our Kura.
A huge thank you also to Te Rōpū ō Manu Huia – Hastings Boys’ and Girls’ High School for their ongoing support and dedication to uplifting our ākonga in every space.
He mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Koia kei a koe, Lani – we are so proud of you
HGHS Students Shine at Pūhoro STEMM Wānanga
A group of our incredible Hastings Girls' High School students proudly represented our kura at the Term 2 Te Matau-a-Māui Wānanga, part of the Pūhoro STEMM Academy.
Hosted in collaboration with Genesis Energy and Plant & Food Research, the wānanga offered a hands-on day of learning, connection and discovery.
From exploring local horticulture and scientific research to experimenting with circuits and building catapults, our ākonga were immersed in all things STEMM! The day was also enriched with waiata, whakawhanaungatanga, and inspiring kōrero about future pathways in science and innovation.
Our students returned energised and inspired — seeing clearly how science and culture walk hand in hand toward their futures. Ka mau te wehi!
