Term Four Week 3
Principal's Message
Kia ora e te whānau,
Last night I had the privilege of sitting in the audience for our annual Showcase, an evening that never fails to leave me inspired. Watching our students share their talents across music, drama, and dance reminded me once again of how powerful it is when young people are given the chance to express themselves. The confidence, creativity, and joy that filled the stage were extraordinary, and it was clear how much dedication our staff and students had poured into bringing this event to life.
Earlier in the week, we held our Final Assembly for senior students — a special moment to acknowledge those who have earned their Gold Ākina badges. These badges are not simply awards; they represent a year of service, participation, and engagement — the very essence of what it means to be part of Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina. Seeing the pride on students’ faces as they were recognised for their efforts was incredibly moving.
It was also a privilege to witness the formal handover of leadership for 2026. Tiana Kupa and Tempryss Lauvao have led with such mana and grace this year, and it was heartwarming to see them pass on the pounamu and korowai to our new Head Girl and Amorangi, Mennat and Maieke. Leadership transitions are always poignant moments — they remind us of the ongoing legacy of our kura and the strength that comes from lifting others up.
Our Diwali celebrations this week brought such colour and joy to the school. The music, decorations, and delicious food created an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness. I loved seeing students and staff coming together to celebrate this festival of light — a beautiful reminder of the rich diversity within our school community.
As we head into Hawke’s Bay Anniversary Weekend, I hope you find time to relax and enjoy being with those who matter most. Next week marks one of the most important events of the year — our Senior Prizegiving on Thursday evening. Prize recipients will receive an email notifying them of their award, so whānau can make arrangements to join us. It is always a proud night where we celebrate the success and aspirations of our ākonga.
Ngā mihi
