Term Four Week 6

Principal's Message

Kia ora koutou

It’s been another busy and productive week at Hastings Girls’ High School – Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina.

Our senior students are now well into their external NCEA exams, and it has been heartening to see high levels of participation across all year levels. In a national climate where student attendance and engagement remain areas of concern, we are proud of the commitment our ākonga continue to show. This is a reflection not only of their personal determination but also of the clear and consistent guidance they’ve received from teachers and whānau throughout the year. We wish them all the very best as they continue to strive for success.

This week we were delighted to host the annual Junior Sports Exchange with Gisborne Girls’ High School — a fantastic day of competition and connection. Our teams gave it their all in Volleyball, Netball, and Rugby 7s, with Gisborne taking out the overall exchange 2–1. We’re proud of the way our girls represented our kura and look forward to visiting Gisborne for the return leg next year.

Our Outdoor Education programme has also been in full swing. The Year 10 Outdoors class visited a local awa as part of their term focus on rivers and lakes — exploring where rivers begin and end, how their water quality changes, and what that means for the ecosystems they support. Students tested water at multiple sites to track purity and observe how this impacts what grows in and around the river. Next week, our Year 9 Outdoors class will head out to the Tukituki River — one of the most significant waterways in the Hastings area — to explore its recreational uses and connection to community wellbeing.

A timely reminder as we approach the summer season: there has been a measles outbreak in several parts of the country. Measles is highly contagious, and we encourage all students, staff, and whānau to check their immunisation status. Please ensure your vaccinations are up to date — it’s a small step that protects not only your whānau but also our wider school community.

Today, our staff are out across the region participating in professional learning with colleagues from other secondary schools. These regional curriculum days are a valuable opportunity to strengthen subject knowledge, share ideas, and continue building a future-focused curriculum. On Monday, our whole staff will be onsite working together on professional development aimed at strengthening our teaching practices, programmes, and outcomes for all students.

Finally, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge and thank Deputy Principal Christian Pera, who finishes at HGHS next week to take up a new role as the founding Principal of Altum Academy in Wellington. Christian has been a member of our Senior Leadership Team for nearly six years and has made a significant contribution to our kura during that time. We wish him every success in this exciting next chapter.

Thank You and Farewell

Dear Students and Whānau

I want to take this small opportunity to thank you all for the gift that has been my time at Hastings Girls’ High School. I have accepted the post of Founding Principal at Altum Academy in Wellington, so it is with some excitement, but a lot of sadness that I part with our school.

I have been at HGHS for five years and three terms, and in that time, I have been fortunate to learn so much from you all. The energy, humour, and kindness you have shared with me has been unlike anything I have experienced elsewhere. To say that this community – whānau, staff, and students – has had a lasting impact on my life, would be an enormous understatement!

As I am moving to a brand-new school, there is a lot to do in a short space of time, so I will be finishing at HGHS on Friday 28 November. Sadly, this means that I will not have the opportunity to say my goodbyes in person to so many of you who have made my time here so special. I am truly sorry for this! I want to wish you all the very best for what lies ahead and hope that if there is any way in which I may be of service in the future, you will not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you, a thousand times, for allowing me to be a small part of your story.

Stay magical – four feathers to the sky!

Mr Pera

Proposal: Bridge Pa/Maraekakaho Bus Service
We Need Your Input

As the current Ministry of Education bus service to the Bridge Pa and Maraekakaho area is set to end in December 2025, we are working on a replacement school bus service for students in these areas.

A detailed email outlining the proposed service was sent to our effected school community on Thursday.

Your input is essential.

If your whānau would like to use this new service, or if you have any questions, please email Rob Orr at or@hastingsgirls.com to register your interest.

Your feedback will help us determine the viability of the service and support our planning.

We need you for Level Up!

As part of our junior careers programme our Year 10s are taking part in Level Up! - a fun, game-style careers experience helping them discover their work preferences and build strategies to hack the future world of work.

Whether you're a tradie, teacher, nurse, business owner, artist, driver or farmer - if you love your mahi, we'd love you to join the fun!

You'll step into their game world as someone our players can learn from.

Game Day: Friday 5 December approx. 9am - 11am
Held at: Hastings Girls' High School

If you can help, please contact Maxine gi@hastingsgirls.com

Celebrating our 100% Superstars

We are proudly celebrating another week of outstanding commitment and attendance at kura.

A massive congratulations to our dedicated ākonga Soraya and Jillian for achieving 100% Attendance this week! Your effort and presence in the classroom is an essential part of your success and our innovative learning environment.

Enjoy your well-deserved sushi vouchers! Tino pai!

Fun in the Sun for our International Students

Last Friday some of our international students joined 70 others from across the region for a fun day out at Ahuriri Beach! A fantastic day was had by all in the beautiful and hot Hawke's Bay weather — and unbelievably, all 75 students braved the absolutely freezing water for a swim!

Empowerment in Action

Last week, our Year 10 students completed a fantastic self-defense course! A massive thank you to the incredible Brie Sergeant from Kia Haumaru - Personal Safety Education for equipping our students with essential skills and confidence. They learned so much!

Academically Innovative Learning in Action!

Our students took their classroom knowledge to the field for an unforgettable day of lake studies at Tutira last week. The challenge was set: to design, build, and successfully float a team member on a hand-built raft and paddle.

Following an intensive knot-tying lesson, the girls demonstrated incredible collaboration and quickly applied their new knowledge and survival skills to complete the task. This type of experiential learning ensures a safe environment where all students are challenged and can thrive.

It was a fantastic day of teamwork, problem-solving, and success for everyone involved!

Junior Sports Exchange with Gisborne Girls' High School

On Tuesday, we were thrilled to host the annual Junior Sports Exchange with Gisborne Girls’ High School — a day full of energy, excitement, and fierce but friendly competition across Volleyball, Netball, and Rugby 7s.

The exchange opened with a tightly contested Volleyball match, where Gisborne narrowly came out on top. In Netball, a strong Gisborne side pulled ahead in the second half to secure another win. The final event, Rugby 7s, was hosted at Hastings Boys’ High School, where our team took out both matches in style, earning a well-deserved win for HGHS in the Rugby code.

With an overall score of 2–1, Gisborne claimed the Exchange Trophy for the first time since 2020.

A huge thank you to Gisborne Girls’ for making the trip and bringing such great competition. We value the connection between our two kura and look forward to the return exchange in 2026!

Congratulations Maddy & Teiyah
Newcastle Knights U17 Squad 2026!

A huge congratulations to Maddy Seumanutafa and Teiyah Fomai on their selection for the Newcastle Knights U17 squad for 2026!

This is an incredible achievement for Teiyah, who joins the squad for the first time — a well-deserved reward for her relentless effort, passion, and consistent performances on the field. A rising talent in our 1st XV, Teiyah brings strength, flair, and a team-first attitude that continues to impress. We’re so proud to see her recognised at this level and can’t wait to watch her shine on this new stage.

For Maddy, this marks her second year with the Knights — a testament to her leadership, resilience, and top-tier skillset. As she prepares to move to Australia full-time, we farewell her with pride and aroha. Maddy has been a key player in our Hastings Girls’ 1st XV for three years and has earned top honours as Junior Sportswoman of the Year (2024) and All-round Sportswoman of the Year (2025). Her impact has been immense and lasting.

We are incredibly proud of both these outstanding young wāhine. They continue to inspire with their courage, dedication, and love for the game — and we’ll be cheering them on all the way!
