Term One Week 4
Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa
Our Academic Assembly is a special occasion where we acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our 2025 students. As is tradition at Hastings Girls’ High School – Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina – the Principal reads a passage from the diary of our founding Principal, Miss Constance Miller. Miss Miller is the only Principal I did not have the privilege of meeting; I am connected in some way to all of the others, and as we journey through the year I will share more about those relationships.
Here is an extract from a prizegiving speech where Miss Miller shared her strong vision for the girls of this school:
“It is generally accepted that these years at secondary school and a few years after are a time when your intelligence will peak – the memory is good and the brain is ready to amass knowledge and the skills of work.”
Miss Miller reminded us that daily habits are the greatest determining factor in whether we will be successful. She served as our first Principal from 1956 to 1967, and her words remain just as relevant today.
It was wonderful to see so many students walk across the stage to receive Certificate and Course Endorsements for Merit and Excellence. A Scholarship recognises the top scholars in a subject area across New Zealand – the very pinnacle of academic achievement. This year we were proud to receive three Scholarships:
Orepa Ta’a – Photography
Harshpreet Kaur – Painting
Nadia Morrell – Painting
We wish these students every success as they begin their university studies.
A Certificate Endorsement is awarded when a student attains 50 credits at Merit or Excellence across their year’s work. This can be achieved at Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.
A Course Endorsement is awarded when a student attains 14 or more Merit or Excellence credits in a subject in a single year. This recognises a student’s ability to truly shine in a particular learning area.
To be awarded either a Certificate or Course Endorsement, students must also have completed their literacy and numeracy co-requisite assessments. The first of these assessments will take place in May, Term 2.
Achieving Merit, Excellence, and Scholarship is not about luck. It is the result of strong daily habits and consistent action. If we look across these outstanding students, they all attend regularly – but what sets them apart is what they do in class. They approach each lesson with 100% engagement. They listen to learn, ask thoughtful questions, take purposeful notes, and review ideas regularly during study time or at home. They treat school and learning like their job, committing fully to growth and achievement each day. No excuses – they simply do the work.
If a student is aiming for an endorsement this year, we encourage them to talk with their Ākina Coach and subject teachers about this goal. When students, teachers and whānau work together with clear intentions and strong daily habits, they are far better positioned to achieve success. We look forward to partnering with families to support our young women as they set goals, build consistent study routines, and strive for excellence.
Well done to all of our students who gained an endorsement – you are stars.
It was a pleasure to celebrate alongside our whānau, sharing cake and photographs together at the conclusion of the Awards. Moments like these remind us of the power of partnership between home and school in supporting excellence.
I would also like to wish our Senior Debaters all the best for this weekend's Regional Debating Competition held at Karamū High School. Good luck to Elizabeth, Pippa, Niharika, Khushi and Paige - we know you’ll represent us with pride!
Ngā mihi nui

Deputy Principal Update
Kia ora koutou
It is hard to believe we are already well into Term 1.
Many of you will know me from my work within the Physical Education & Health Department or through my previous role as a Purple House Dean. More recently in my role as Acting Deputy Principal, I have had the absolute pleasure of working closely with our incredible students in Te Rōpū Manu Huia Kapa Haka and our vibrant Pasifika groups. These experiences continue to show me the immense talent and heart our students possess, and I am looking forward to supporting the school’s operations to ensure every student has the environment they need to thrive.
Looking ahead, we have our Senior Parent-Teacher Interviews approaching. These evenings are more than just a progress check; they are an ideal time for whānau to connect directly with subject teachers.
Building this bridge between home and school ensures we are all pulling in the same direction to support our students' success. We truly value your insights and your presence at these kōrero.
We look forward to seeing the continued growth of our students as the term progresses. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school community.
Ngā mihi nui

Senior Parent Teacher Interviews
On Thursday 12 March we will be holding our Senior Whānau Hui from 3.30-6.00pm.
This is an opportunity to come to the school hall to meet your student's teachers and discuss their progress towards their academic goals and NCEA this year. You will receive a report before then that will summarise your student's effort in learning and a summary of the Learning Conversations that they have been having with their Ākina Coach.
Please book a time to meet your student's teachers by going to: https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/r8nrg
You may also ring the school office on (06) 873 1133 or by getting in touch with your student's Ākina Coach.
Striving for Excellence – Celebrating Our 2025 Academic Achievers
We are so proud of our 2025 Endorsement and Scholarship recipients!
Excellence isn’t luck—it’s built on strong daily habits, grit, and a commitment to growth. Huge congratulations to every student who walked across the stage at our Academic Assembly on Monday. Your hard work has officially paid off!
Our Leaders, Our Future: The 2026 Badging Ceremony
On Monday, we held a Special Assembly to officially welcome and acknowledge our 2026 Student Leaders. It was a proud and meaningful moment as each student crossed the stage to receive their leadership badge—a symbol of their commitment to our kura and the journey ahead.
These young women represent the diverse voices of our community, and we are so excited to see the innovative ways they will lead, inspire, and grow alongside their peers this year. Congratulations to our new leaders; we look forward to the positive impact and fresh perspectives you will bring to our school whānau.
Growing the Ākina Spirit
Our student leaders kicked off Tuesday morning with the annual Leaders Breakfast here at HGHS. These catch-ups are such a valuable way to grow our leadership networks, strengthen connections, and collaborate with our peers.
This year, the relationship between our Ākina schools feels stronger than ever. There is a real sense of unity and shared purpose as we look ahead. Our leaders came together not just to enjoy breakfast, but to intentionally map out the year ahead—identifying opportunities for collaboration, connection, and collective impact across our brother and sister schools.
From joint events and friendly competitions to shared service initiatives and leadership development opportunities, there is genuine excitement about what we can achieve together. When our schools work in partnership, our students benefit from broader perspectives, deeper relationships, and a stronger sense of community across Hastings.

Sports Wrap Up – Week 3
Volleyball – Senior A
After three dominant wins this season, the girls were determined to keep standards high against Havelock North. The first set was a tightly contested battle, edged out by just a few points. From there, the girls lifted another gear, claiming the next two sets to secure a 3–0 win. This marks their fourth straight victory, keeping them undefeated as they continue to build momentum heading toward Nationals in a few weeks’ time.
Touch Rugby
Last week marked the start of the Touch season at the sports park for both teams. The Red team went down in a competitive match against OutKast, while the Blue team kicked off their season strongly with a solid win over Woodford.
Kī-o-Rahi
It was also the first week of competition at Karamū for our two teams. Both teams played two matches and finished the round with one win and one loss each — a promising start to the season.
Waka Ama
Our girls are tracking well as they enter their fourth week of training in preparation for the Regional Championships in early March. In addition, our top paddlers are preparing to travel to Rotorua later in March for their National campaign.
Newcastle Knights – Round 3
After coming off back-to-back wins, Maddy and Teiyah were eager to make an impact for the Knights in their Round 3 clash against the Melbourne Storm. Just two minutes into the match, Maddy burst clean through two defenders to score the opening try, setting the tempo for the remainder of the game. The Knights went on to dominate, securing an emphatic 46–12 victory to remain undefeated and sit proudly on top of the table.
