Term One Week 6
Principal's Message
What an incredible Athletics Day we had. Thank you to everyone for bringing such energy, fun, and laughter to the event. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another, celebrating each other’s successes, and showing true House spirit. A special congratulations to Gold House, who took out first place in the House competition. Two standout moments from the day were the fiercely contested Haka Competition and the vibrant Holi Run, which closed the event in a burst of colour and celebration of diversity, unity and joy. A huge thank you goes to our Sports Coordinators, Finn and Fale, our dedicated teaching staff, and our hardworking, grounds, admin and kitchen teams. Your combined efforts created a day that truly reflected the strength of our school community.
Last week marked the halfway point of the term, and it has been great to see everyone settling back into the rhythm of school life and learning.
Over the past few weeks, I have been meeting with teachers to reflect on how we are living our school values. They shared that, as a school, we demonstrate manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga exceptionally well. There is a genuine sense of kindness and care as we move around the school, and I am incredibly proud of the way our students embody these values every day.
The values we now need to strengthen are whakaaute — respect — and what this looks like in our daily interactions. One of HGHS’s greatest strengths is our young, vibrant staff, who care deeply about our girls and their learning. Girls, you are very fortunate to have them. Treating staff with respect and kindness is our Ākina challenge for the rest of the term.
We are also focusing on pono — integrity, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Thank you to our senior students who represented HGHS so beautifully on a recent trip to participate in the Spark Tank 2026 Young Enterprise Scheme. They were noticed helping at the venue without being asked and showed both pono and whakaaute by wearing their uniform with pride. Each of these students received a small treat as a token of appreciation. I am very proud of the example they set for our school.
We have also reminded students about the importance of arriving on time each morning and being prompt to every class so they can make the most of their learning. I look forward to seeing this continue to improve as we move into the second half of the term.
Last week, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with an HGHS old girl, Prof Dr Kristina Laver, who was an international student from Germany in 2008. She spoke fondly of her time here, the friendships she formed, and the lasting connections she still maintains. Dr Laver shared how her exchange experience opened her eyes to the world, and how meaningful one-on-one connections with her teachers were in helping her grow academically. She is passionate about the impact of international education, and I was proud to share how our own International Department has evolved since her time here. Having international students enriches our school culture, broadens our perspectives, and strengthens our acceptance of diverse cultures. Under the dedicated care of Ms Fugle, this area of our school continues to flourish as new global connections are built.

Deputy Principal Update
The term is moving quickly, and with only three weeks until the holidays, learning programmes are well underway. Our junior students will be completing assessments across many of their classes before the end of the term, so it’s important they remain focused and give their best effort. The senior school is also busy, with NCEA assessments already taking place in some subjects.
Recently, we have been highlighting our values of pono and whakaute. When students apply these values to their learning, they show focus, consistency, and a commitment to doing their best.
Next week, we welcome representatives from Massey University and the University of Otago. These visits are valuable for Year 12 and 13 students considering university pathways, offering insights into future study options and what life is like at a tertiary institution.
It was wonderful to connect with parents, caregivers, and whānau at our senior parent–teacher interviews on Thursday. There was a positive atmosphere as early progress for the year was discussed. These occasions strengthen our partnerships and support student success.
There are several learning trips happening before Easter. Senior English Language classes will visit Ātea a Rangi and the Waka Hourua in Ahuriri, Biology students will explore the Rocky Shore in Napier, Geography and PE in the Outdoors students will take on the Tongariro Crossing, and our Year 10 Outdoors Hub will head to Waimārama.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students engage, achieve, and succeed.

International Update: From Athletics Day to the Streets of Tokyo
It has been wonderful watching our current international students thrive at Hastings Girls'. They are happily embracing our relaxed Kiwi lifestyle, are forming lasting friendships with our local girls, and they are becoming an integral part of our school fabric. A huge shout out to the Sports team, Finn and Fale, for organising an amazing 2026 Athletics day and colour run that our international girls thoroughly loved (as you can see from the photo!).
The heart of our international programme is our incredible network of homestay families. We are always looking to grow this community and are currently seeking families interested in short-term stays (one to two weeks).
We are specifically looking for host families for a group of Chinese and Japanese students arriving in the first week of August. This is a fantastic, low-commitment way to experience the rewards of hosting and to share our culture with visiting students. If you are interested in joining our homestay team, please reach out!
We are thrilled to announce that we have won the National Tokyo Global Friendship Programme competition!
As winners, we have been awarded the incredible opportunity to send eight students and a teacher chaperone to Tokyo for seven days. This is a prestigious chance for our students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while proudly showcasing their own.
This trip is partially funded by the programme, and pays for the girls' meals, accommodation, and transport costs during the programme, as well as comprehensive medical insurance, and activity fees. Students will need to pay for return flights, travel insurance and spending money.
Eligibility: Open to all students in Years 11, 12, and 13.
Selection: The final eight students will be selected by our Principal, Mrs Lisa Akers and the Senior Leadership Team.
This is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for our senior students to act as global ambassadors for our school.
If you have questions about becoming a homestay family for our August intake, or if your daughter is interested in the Tokyo trip, please contact Jen by email: international@hastingsgirls.com

Leading by Example: HGHS Pride in Action!
We are incredibly proud of five of our senior students who truly embodied our school values during a recent trip to Toitoi.
While others were packing up to leave, Elizabeth Tere, Rebecca Iorangi, Tagi Olive, Kahmarni Ormsby-Te Tau and Glora Fraser-Nuku (absent from photo) stepped up without being asked. They were spotted actively stacking and moving chairs from other schools, ensuring the venue was left in perfect order.
This is a powerful display of Pono—integrity, and doing the right thing even when you think no one is watching—and Whakaaute, showing respect for the environment and representing HGHS with pride in their uniform.
"Character is what you do when no one is looking, but your actions didn't go unnoticed!"
As a small token of our appreciation, each student received a treat to celebrate their leadership. Thank you for setting such a stellar example for our school community. You’ve made us all very proud!
Young Enterprise Scheme: Sparking Innovation at Toitoi
On Wednesday, our senior business studies students spent the morning at the Toitoi - Hawke’s Bay Arts & Events Centre. The annual Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Spark Tank event served as the official launch for this year’s regional programme, bringing together business studies students from across the Bay.
The Spark Tank event is the first major event on the YES calendar. It offers students a unique platform to move their business concepts from the drawing board into the real world. Throughout the morning, our students engaged in:
Mentorship Sessions: Direct access to local business leaders and industry experts who provided invaluable "speed-dating" style feedback.
Networking: Connecting with YES students from other regional schools to share insights and build a supportive community of young founders.
Programme Briefings: Gaining a clear roadmap of the busy year ahead, including upcoming pitch competitions and market days.
A Day of Exploration and Connection
Last Thursday, our Year 9 Outdoors Elective Class headed to Te Mata Peak for a day of exploration and connection. It was fantastic to see the girls setting a great pace as they wound their way down to the Redwoods for a well-deserved lunch.
We were blessed with stunning weather, which gave us the perfect opportunity to dive into some of the lesser-known trails on our return journey. From basking in the afternoon sun to soaking up those iconic Hawke's Bay views, it was a wonderful day of 'place-based' learning.
Welcome Maeve Reid
Athletics Fun
Our School Athletics Day was a fantastic success, filled with energy, enthusiasm, and great sportsmanship from all students involved. The weather provided ideal conditions, allowing the full programme of events to run smoothly throughout the day.
Students participated in a wide range of track and field events, including sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put, and distance races. It was wonderful to see so many students giving their best effort, supporting their teammates, and demonstrating positive attitudes whether they were competing or cheering from the sidelines.
A highlight of the day was the House relay races, tug of war, the Holi colour run and House Haka, which brought plenty of excitement and loud support from spectators. Many students achieved personal bests, and several impressive performances were seen across all year levels.
We would like to thank the staff, volunteers, and student leaders who helped organise and run the events, ensuring the day was safe, enjoyable, and well-managed.
Overall, Athletics Day was a great celebration of participation, teamwork, and school spirit. Well done to all students for their effort and enthusiasm.
